One More Bug
So Many Critters!

As I have mentioned in a previous article, my husband and I cleared our garden from 20 years of neglect. But, instead of turning it into a perfectly manicured and clipped suburban front garden, we wanted to do something a little different.
We wanted to make a wildlife garden. One that would attract all kinds of insects, small mammals and amphibians. I should point out that we are not gardeners and our garden has a long way to go, it is still very much work in progress, but I love that about it.
To begin with we let the grass grow, we didn't mow it for 6 months. Some of the grass was as tall as me! And we started to see plants we hadn't planted, weave their way in and out of the grass. Needless to say, the kids loved it!!
Other plants started cropping up too, beautiful native orchids, red, pink and white bouncing bess, forget me nots, poppies to name just a few. And around these plants were lots of bees, flying insects, beetles, butterflies and moths. Just fabulous! Lots of critters for our boy to explore.
We had that many grasshoppers it's hard to describe. You could just run your hand over the grass and they would ping out of the way left and right! Our son had the best time with a fishing net catching them to examine and gently release. Not to mention all the spiders, beetles, ants (there was a fantastic ant hill hidden in the long grass), woodlice, snails, slugs, frogs, toads, butterflies, moths, newts, slowworms that my boy could wish for!
My absolute favourite I have seen was a hummingbird moth. I have never seen one before and didn't really know what I was looking at. I could see this large insect hovering around the bouncing bess with its wings going so fast you could only see a blur. It looked just like a tiny hummingbird! I did manage to get a very blurred photo of it, before it shot off, but it still amazes me.
Because of all the insects and the seeds from the grass and plants we have in the garden we also get lots of different kinds of birds coming to visit, although not as many as I would like because there are what feels like hundreds of neighbourhood cats that use our garden as a walk through, much to my annoyance. Wildlife I love, but seeing the frogs from our pond decapitated and small creatures killed and discarded from domestic cats, I don't like at all.
We also definitely have a hedgehog that comes to visit. We haven't been lucky enough to spot it in person, but we have spotted its stools which is very exciting!
I have watched our garden change with the seasons and with the years and a real interest is starting to emerge in both my husband and I. Next year we are planning on being a little more structured with our approach, mowing slightly more regularly to help the flowers establish over the year and have started planting fruit plants and herbs in containers as well as some daffodils in the lawn and a big tub of tulips, my favourite flowers. I'm also planning a cottage garden style border against the adjoining fence.
Before we started this the grass was overrun with dandelions, they were literally everywhere. It was patchy and just didn't look healthy. Now we have very few dandelions, the grass is lush and green and it is a place that I want to spend time in. I love pottering about looking for new plants, checking out the pond and just enjoying it. Watching all the plants die back now for winter, I wonder what next year will bring, which plants will grace with their presence, what new species of insects and animals and birds we will see and whether my bulbs will take!
